Tresca’s Ricotta Gnocchi

Over spring break I took a trip down to Faneuil Hall in Boston for a day of good food, drinks, and some shopping.  The highlight of the day was dinner (and dessert) in the North End, which is known for its outstanding Italian food.  My parents had discovered a restaurant here that they couldn’t stop talking about, so we decided to go there for dinner.

Tresca is an Italian restaurant owned by the former Boston Bruin Ray Bourque.  The menu has some traditional Italian dishes, but it also has its specialties that you won’t find anywhere else.  I ordered the Ricotta Gnocchi: ricotta and potato filled gnocchi, wild mushroom ragu, black truffle, and spinach.  I used to hate mushrooms but I’ve been eating them more and more lately and I’ve found that they are actually pretty good, so I decided to venture out of my comfort zone with this one.  What a great decision on my part!

The ricotta gnocchi had a perfect soft texture and was clearly freshly prepared.  The wild mushroom ragu was rich and made the gnocchi melt in your mouth.  I heard of black truffles previously so I knew that they had quite the reputation of being pricey and worth every cent.  I’m here to confirm this reputation because they complemented this dish so nicely.  I don’t know what about them makes them that much better than regular mushrooms, but they were simply amazing.  I ordered the half-portion so I was a little disappointed that I didn’t have any leftovers after I finished it, but now I know to get the full portion next time around!  To put into perspective how delicious the food was here, my mom got the bolognese which is a simple, traditional Italian dish but it was easily the best bolognese I’ve ever tried!  If you’re ever in the North End, I highly recommend going to Tresca.
